NOTABLE PEOPLE BORN ON THIS DAY include singer Shirley Bassey, who was born in 1937; actor Ron Cephas Jones, who was born in 1957; radio and television writer and commentator Charles Osgood, who was born in 1933; classical pianist Vladimir Feltsman, who was born in 1952; former baseball player Jeff Francoeur, who was born in 1984; actress Kathleen Noone, who was born in 1945; game show host Bob Eubanks, who was born in 1938; former baseball player Jason Giambi, who was born in 1971; and U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, who was born in 1958.

SPACE THEORETICIST AND AUTHOR Stephen Hawking was born on this day in 1942. A theoretical physicist, cosmologist and author, Hawking worked with collaborator Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems and theorized that black holes emit radiation. He was also the first to define a theory of cosmology based on the intersection of the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. Hawking published several books explaining his work to the general public. His most popular, “A Brief History of Time,” broke bestseller list records upon its release. Hawking died in 2018.

GREAT ROCK ’N’ ROLLER Elvis Presley was born on this day in 1935. A singer and actor, Presley is known as the “King of Rock and Roll.” His first RCA single, “Heartbreak Hotel” (1956), became a number-one hit, and Presley would go on be become the best-selling solo artist of all time. He appeared in 30 films over the course of his career, including “Love Me Tender” (1956), “Blue Hawaii” (1961) and “Viva Las Vegas” (1964). Presley died in 1977.

FETCH THAT SWEATER: Today is National Argyle Day, to celebrate the pattern which came from the Clan Campbell of Argyll in western Scotland. Argyle is known for its use in socks, sweaters and kilts.
