THE WORLD’S LONGEST-RUNNING TALK SHOW: The Tonight Show premiered on this day in 1954. The show was originally filmed at the NBC studios in Rockefeller Center in New York City, and after years of filming in Los Angeles, returned to New York in 2014. Hosts have included Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon. When President Barack Obama appeared on the show in 2009, The Tonight Show was the first late-night talk show to have a current president as its guest.

INFLUENTIAL ILLUSTRATOR: Widely considered to be the “Father of the American Cartoon,” Thomas Nast was a German-born American caricaturist and editorial cartoonist. For his artwork that garnered support for the Union during the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln called Nast “our best recruiting sergeant.” Nast invented the modern version of Santa Claus, and the Republican Party elephant symbol. He was most notably associated with Harper’s Weekly. Nast died on Dec. 7, 1902.

TRAVEL WELL: Today is World Tourism Day, to promote sustainable tourism. The World Tourism Organization is an agency of the United Nations that works to develop “responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism.” Its membership includes 158 countries, six associate members and more than 500 affiliate members. Its headquarters are located in Madrid, Spain.
