THE FIRST WOMAN TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT, Victoria Woodhull, was born on this day in 1838. Woodhull was an American feminist, a leader of the women’s suffrage movement, and the first woman to start a weekly newspaper, Woodhull & Claflin’s Weekly. She was also the first woman to own a brokerage firm on Wall Street and ran for president of the U.S. in 1872. She died in Bredon, Worcestershire, England on June 9, 1927.

THE MAN IN THE SILVER MASK: “Luchador enmascarado” (masked professional wrestler) El Santo was born on this day in 1917. Born as Rodolfo Guzmán Huerta, El Santo was one of the most well-known and influential Mexican athletes of all time. He was also a film actor, appearing in at least 52 movies during his career, and is regarded as a folk hero and symbol of justice for his appearances in comic book stories. El Santo died in Mexico City, Mexico on Feb. 5, 1984, and was buried in his iconic silver mask.

SOUL MUSIC PIONEER Ray Charles was born on this day in 1930. Charles was a singer-songwriter, pianist, bandleader and producer. One of the most influential performers of all time, he combined blues, rhythm and blues, and gospel music, and is known for his performances of “Georgia on My Mind,” “I Can’t Stop Loving You” and “America the Beautiful.” Charles died on June 10, 2004 in Beverly Hills, California.
