SACCO AND VANZETTI WERE EXECUTED by electric chair on this day in 1927. Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were Italian-born anarchists convicted in 1921 of an armed robbery at a shoe factory that left one guard dead. The verdict was surrounded by controversy as many believed that anti-immigrant bias had influenced the jury substantially. Protests on their behalf were held around the world in 1927 and celebrated intellectuals took up their cause. When the verdict was upheld and the two were executed, riots followed in Paris and London.

THE “STOCKHOLM SYNDROME” ROBBERY took place on this day in 1973. In Stockholm, Sweden, Jan Erik Olsson and Clark Olofsson took four hostages in a bank robbery and barricaded themselves in with the hostages in the bank’s vault. Eventually the hostages were released, and authorities realized the captives were more afraid of the police than the robbers, prompting Swedish professor Nils Bejerot to coin the phrase “Stockholm syndrome” to describe the phenomenon of hostages identifying with their captors.
