AMELIA EARHART DISAPPEARED on this day in 1937 along with her navigator, Fred Noonan. Earhart and Noonan were attempting an around-the-world trip which would set the record for the longest flight ever completed. They departed from New Guinea for the final 7,000 miles over the Pacific, and about 800 miles into that flight, air traffic control lost radio contact with Earhart’s plane. The plane and the remains of Earhart and Noonan were never located.
