GEORGE CAYLEY WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1773. The aviation pioneer was an English scientist, inventor and theoretician who designed airplanes, helicopters and gliders. He is credited as the father of aerodynamics, and he was the pilot of the world’s first manned glider flight. He died on Dec. 15, 1857.

JOHANNES KEPLER WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1571. One of the world’s greatest astronomers, called “the father of modern astronomy,” German mathematician Kepler was born in Württemberg, Germany. He died at Regensburg, Germany on Nov. 15, 1630.

RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL OPENED ON THIS DAY IN 1932. Among the opening-night performers were the “Radio Roxyettes.”

LEE SALK WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1926. The American child psychologist was born in New York City. He became well known for proving the calming effect of a mother’s heartbeat on a newborn infant. Salk’s warning during the 1970s that women should not abandon full-time child rearing was met with wide opposition, especially from working mothers. He died on May 2, 1992.
