~BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY’S CULTURE PASS OFFERS FREE DAY PASSES FOR MUSEUMS: A Brooklyn Public Library card now provides you with the opportunity to do lot more than just check out the latest spy thriller from your local branch. Under a new program called Culture Pass, a library card can be used as a ticket into more than 30 museums and cultural institutions around New York City, including such borough icons as the Brooklyn Museum, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the Brooklyn Historical Society. The Brooklyn, Queens and New York public library systems are all participating in Culture Pass. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~PRE BQE REHAB, DOT SEARCHES FOR WAREHOUSE WALLS BELOW PROMENADE: Remnants of historic warehouses still exist under the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, and the Department of Transportation is working to figure out where they are before starting the upcoming $1.9 billion rehabilitation of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Contractors with DOT’s Division of Bridges began a ground-penetrating radar survey this week to find structures that were partly demolished to construct the BQE’s triple cantilever. One or more of the walls may be integral to the cantilever’s structure. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~STROLL DOWN LEONARD STREET AND SEE A SLICE OF EAST WILLIAMSBURG: Come with us as we exit the Metropolitan Avenue subway and head one block east so we can stroll down Leonard Street. This will give us a slightly different perspective on the neighborhood. The first thing we notice is the unusual sidewalk kiddie ride outside Metropolitan Fish Market. We think coin-operated pony rides are nostalgia-inducing. They always catch our eye. They can be found on many retail corridors in Brooklyn neighborhoods.(via Brooklyn Eagle)

~CONSTITUENTS CALL ON POLS TO END SOCIAL MEDIA BLOCKING: Now that not one, but two federal courts have deemed the attempts of elected officials to block constituents on social media a direct violation of the First Amendment, five grassroots groups in Brooklyn have banded together to pen a petition targeted at three elected officials they say have censored those who criticize them. The pols in the hot seat include Congressmember Dan Donovan, state Senator Marty Golden and Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis, all Republicans. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~REPORT: ALLOY DEVELOPMENT BUYS 2 DUMBO BUILDINGS FOR $50 MILLION: Brooklyn-based Alloy Development is reportedly purchasing two interconnected buildings in DUMBO for more than $50 million. The developer is in contract to buy 42 Jay St. and 50 Jay St. from Phoenix House, an organization that helps people overcome substance abuse. The building at 50 Jay St. is five stories high, while the one at 42 Jay St. is seven stories high. Phoenix House put the two buildings on the market in January. (The Real Deal via Brooklyn Eagle)

~DE BLASIO’S FREIGHT NYC PLAN TO CREATE 5,000 JOBS, MANY IN SUNSET PARK: In an effort to reinvent the city’s system of moving goods and tackle New York’s over-dependence on trucking, Mayor Bill de Blasioannounced Freight NYC, a plan that will create around 5,000 jobs, including many in Sunset Park, as well as improve air quality. The goal of the approximately $100 million plan, announced on Monday is to overhaul the city’s aging freight distribution systems through strategic investments to modernize maritime and rail assets, and create new distribution facilities. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BED-STUY RADICAL COFFEE SHOP FOUNDS EDUCATIONAL NONPROFIT: When her father’s hardware store at Bedford Avenue and Quincy Street in Bed-Stuy went out of business last year, Zenat Begum, a recent graduate of the New School, created Playground Coffee Shop in the space. Begum, a Bengali-American, conceived of Playground as a radical coffee shop geared toward people of color, especially artists, with a bookstore, events and eventually an educational nonprofit. On July 7, the store supported the launch of that nonprofit, dubbed Playground Youth, with a weekend-long art fair. (Grub Street via Brooklyn Eagle)

EAGLE SPORTS: While rumors abound that several members of the New York Mets’ vaunted starting rotation may be up for grabs at the July 31 trade deadline, there is a young pitcher on the rise within the organization in Brooklyn. Cyclones right-hander Jaison Vilera might not be Jacob deGrom orNoah Syndergaard just yet, but the 21-year-old Venezuelan is starting to flash the type of dominance that projects him to be a future ace for the parent club. Vilera, who won the organization’s Sterling Award last year, extended his ongoing scoreless innings streak to 16 on Tuesday with a dazzling seven-inning stint. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
