The parents of Luz Gonzales, a 4-year-old girl who was killed by a hit-and-run driver in a laundromat parking lot in Bushwick in June, were not able to attend her funeral in her native Mexico because they were afraid they wouldn’t be allowed to return to the U.S. Her parents, who are working to apply for green cards, were worried about the increase in deportations, according to the Brooklyn Paper.

Meanwhile, protesters in the heavily Hispanic neighborhood have increasingly been calling for the arrest of driver Jeannette Maria, who was stopped by police shortly after she ran over Luz and struck her mother in the parking lot of Clean City at 82 Wyckoff Ave. on June 24. Maria is rumored to have family connections to local law enforcement, but neither NYPD nor the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office responded to queries on this subject from the Brooklyn Paper. Paul Steely White, executive director of Transportation Alternatives, said in a statement that “Luz and her family deserve justice,” but that “Right now, with the president we have, it’s hard for anyone [who’s not a citizen] to leave the country and try to come back.”
