~PERMANENT POOL FINALLY COMING TO BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK: It was all smiles Friday morning as Brooklyn Bridge Park announced plans to build a permanent pool at Squibb Park, which sits just above Brooklyn Bridge Park in Brooklyn Heights. The announcement was a dream come true for hundreds of parents in the group Love Our Pool, who had worked with officials and the park for a permanent pool to replace the beloved but temporary Pop-Up Pool, now in its final season in the park. “What’s clear is that Brooklyn Bridge Park visitors love swimming at the park,” Brooklyn Bridge Park President Eric Landau said. “And the park needs and deserves a permanent pool for swimming.” (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~EPA TO NATIONAL GRID: IT’S TIME TO PAY FOR THE GOWANUS CANAL CLEANUP: It’s only a drop in the bucket, but a historic milestone nonetheless. The Environmental Protection Agency and National Grid agreed on a $100 million settlement that will go towards cleaning up the notoriously toxic Gowanus Canal. National Grid, which was identified as a responsible party for the waterway’s pollution, is one of 28 entities required to pay for a portion of the remediation process. The agreement will go toward cleanup work at the head of the canal and toward the cleaning and restoration of Thomas Greene Park and the Douglass and Degraw Pool. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~DAVID CROSS SHARPENS COMEDIC BLADE ON BROOKLYN AUDIENCE: Long known for his acerbic wit, David Cross sharpened his verbal sword last week at the Knitting Factory in Williamsburg, making use of an informal session before a Brooklyn crowd as he prepared for his upcoming summer tour. In a set that ramped up with a long story about a couples colonic and crescendoed with a graphic demonstration of his fantasy about defecating in President Donald Trump’s mouth after watching him get beat unconscious byRon Perlman, Cross asked, “Anyone walking out yet?” (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~PILOT PROGRAM WILL RESERVE PARKING SPACES FOR CAR SHARING COMPANIES: Local car owners beware! Starting today, the city will be reserving about 300 parking spots throughout the five boroughs and reserving them for vehicles from car-share companies like Zipcar. This is the first time the companies, which typically keep their vehicles in garages, will be allowed to store cars on city streets. Officials say making more vehicles available to be shared by New Yorkers could lessen their reliance on individual cars, reducing congestion and air pollution. (NYT via Brooklyn Eagle)

~ABSENTEE BALLOTS FOR NOVEMBER 2017 ELECTION DELIVERED IN APRIL 2018: Last month, the city’s Board of Elections received 2,000 pieces of belated mail, including hundreds of absentee ballots that should have been counted in the November 2017 election. The ballots, which were postmarked in early November, arrived at the BOE on April 24 and 25. New York PostmasterElvin Mercado said there was a “verbal agreement” between the BOE and the Postal Service, permitting elections officials to pick up ballots during the election season. (WNYC via Brooklyn Eagle)

~$1 BILLION DEVELOPMENT SITE AT GREENPOINT LANDING TO START CONSTRUCTION IN 2019: Two new rental development sites are expected to start construction on schedule in 2019. Greenpoint Landing, a rapidly emerging area on the Brooklyn waterfront, is a 22-acre site located along the East River. The site will house two more buildings with a total of 1,240 rental units. The overall cost of the development is valued at around $1 billion. Greenpoint Landing will offer 5,500 rental properties, 1,400 of which will be below market rate housing. The landing will also house a pre-K through eighth grade public school, four acres of public green space and a waterfront esplanade. (GlobeSt.com via Brooklyn Eagle)
