Cynthia Nixon unveils pro-tenant agenda
Cynthia Nixon, the actress who is challenging Gov. Andrew Cuomo for the Democratic nomination in September, has announced a series of measures aimed at protecting renters, according to Curbed New York. Among the proposals in her “Rent Justice for All” program are ending the preferential rent loophole, by which landlords can offer an apartment for less than the legal regulated rent but can revoke this privilege whenever the lease is renewed; expanding rent stabilization statewide to buildings with six or more units, which is currently the law in New York City; and increasing funding to the state’s Homes and Community Renewal agency. “Half of our state residents are renters, and under Governor Cuomo, New York’s renters have been left behind,” Nixon said in a statement. As an actress, Nixon was best known for her role in HBO’s “Sex and the City.”
