~STRINGER REPORT SAYS OFF-PEAK SUBWAY CUSTOMERS LEFT STRANDED: New York City is increasingly a 24-hour city — but the city’s subway system is leaving its off-peak customers waiting on the platform, according to a study released by Comptroller Scott Stringer on Friday. The study shows a substantial drop-off in service during non-traditional commuting hours. The MTA runs 60 percent fewer trains citywide from 5 a.m. to 6 a.m., for example, than it does from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., and 38 percent fewer from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. (via Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~BROOKLYN RESTAURANTS ARE FACING LAWSUITS: Next to a wall of pizza ovens, an assembly line of workers at Brooklyn’s L&B Spumoni Gardens dishes out square, after round, after square pies as beads of sweat drip down their faces. While the shoulder-to-shoulder customers make their way to the cash register, a worker’s call: “Tips, guys!” is responded by a resounding, “Thank you!” when a dollar falls into the jar. Across the way at the restaurant’s sit-in area, Isaac Perez, a former cook of 13 years, has filed a federal lawsuit against owners for skirting mandatory overtime pay. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~IN BROOKLYN, MODERNIZING A LIBRARY FOR ROBOTS AND DOWNLOADS: By early 2020, the wave of people that surges into the Brooklyn Public Library on Grand Army Plaza every day will be reminded ofMajor R. Owens, because the library is about to begin an ambitious renovation project. One of the first things people will see — after they pass through the monumental entrance with its sculptures of literary figures like Hiawatha and Tom Sawyer — will be the Major Owens Welcome Center. (via The New York Times)
