In the wake of a snowstorm that dropped nearly a foot of snow on parts of Brooklyn and New York, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is urging New Yorkers to watch out for weather-related price gouging.

“New Yorkers should remain wary of fraudsters who use severe winter weather as an excuse to illegally line their pockets,” Schneiderman said. “We will not tolerate those who seek to exploit weather emergencies at the expense of New Yorkers. Any New Yorker that believes they may have been the victim of price gouging should contact my office right away.”

Price gouging is a sensitive subject for Schneiderman recently as this comes on the heels of an announcement of an investigation into possible misconduct by propane suppliers across New York.

New York law prohibits excessive price increases of essential goods and services such as food, water, gas, generators, batteries, flashlights, hotel lodging and transportation during “abnormal disruption of the market.”

After winter storms these protections are extended to contractors hired to remove snow and make home repairs.

Schneiderman’s suggestions to avoid price gouging include shopping around, get contracts in writing, don’t pay unreasonable advanced sums, get references and to know your rights. He said New Yorkers should contact his hotline at 518-776-2000 if they want to file a complaint.
