LIU-Brooklyn ladies ‘March’ on in NEC Tournament
Title-hungry Blackbirds basketball sneak past St. Francis, advance to semifinals
After watching their male counterparts complete a storied run to the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday, the Long Island University (LIU) Brooklyn women’s hoops squad began blazing its own path toward March Madness Wednesday night.
Senior forward DeAngelique Waithe amassed game highs of 19 points and 12 rebounds as the Blackbirds edged neighborhood rival St. Francis College (SFC) Brooklyn, 59-56, in the quarterfinal round of the Northeast Conference Tournament in front of 220 fans at Robert Morris’ North Athletic Complex.
The men’s team, which also defeated SFC in the opening round before sneaking past Fairleigh Dickinson and stunning top-seeded Wagner, will find out its first-round NCAA Tournament opponent during Selection Sunday.
