In this courtroom sketch, Justice Ira Margulis presides as singer John Legend testifies at a jury trial in Queens County Supreme Criminal Court on Feb. 13. At issue was the alleged theft of Legend’s carry-on bag in March 2017 from a JFK airport luggage cart by cab driver Hilario Augustin. At left, Court Officer Lauren Rang displays the $5,000 Louis Vuitton luggage. Assistant District Attorneys Michelle Witten (standing) and Jason Trager (at right) elicited descriptions of the bag’s contents from Legend, which included mention of a Lanvin jewelry case that held cuff links, including diamond-encrusted Cartier panther cuff links that were a gift from Legend’s wife and valued at approximately $30,000. With the help of surveillance video, Port Authority police located and returned Legend’s bag the day after it was reported missing. Attorney Jose Xavier Orochena (not pictured) represented the defendant cabbie. Under questioning by Orochena, Legend responded that he could not detect whether the bag’s contents had been rifled. In a lighter moment, Legend also politely declined to sing for the court. The trial continues this week.
