~BROOKLYN’S ALL-NIGHT LOVE AFFAIR WITH PHILOSOPHY AT BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY: Brooklyn Public Library’s Night of Philosophy and Ideas — an all-night marathon of philosophical debate, performances, screenings and music — drew more than 7,000 people to the Central Library recently. The free 12-hour exchange of ideas drew top philosophers and philosophy lovers from around the world. The evening kicked off with a keynote lecture by George Yancy, author and professor of philosophy at Emory University. After writing the controversial “Dear White America” piece published in The New York Times, Yancy received “tons of hate mail — really vitriolic, white supremacist responses,” he said, adding, “In a free society, all are involved in what some are doing.” Other talks included “Why Monuments Matter,” “Saving the Media,” “Tackling Democratic Entropy” and topics of social justice. Members of the French circus collective Compagnie XY performed acrobatic feats with a philosophical bent and included audience members who proved to be fearless and well-balanced. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~MAJORITY OF PUBLIC HOUSING RESIDENTS WITHOUT HEAT AT ONE POINT: A fiery City Council hearing with the New York City Housing Authority revealed that at one point since October, four out of five public housing residents were without heat. The Housing Authority chairwoman Shola Olatoye and other city officials were grilled by councilmembers and NYCHA residents for hours at the hearing. “Just apologize!” City Council speaker Corey Johnson told Olatoye. “Just say, ‘We are sorry, we are sorry that it’s gotten to this point.’” While audience members were instructed not to interject, they frequently waved their hands in support of certain questions or comments and made their voices heard despite the disclaimer. “That’s a lie!” one woman yelled. “No one wants to take responsibility,” another said. During the current heating season, 323,098 residents, more than 80 percent of the authority’s population, had no heat at some time. Olatoye said she acknowledged the suffering but did not apologize, saying instead that the “interruptions in service were unacceptable.” (via NYT)

~WORLD’S LARGEST BAGEL AND LOX SANDWICH IS MADE IN GREENPOINT: Friday was National Bagel and Lox Day, and Acme Smoked Fish Corp. in Greenpoint celebrated by attempting to make the world’s largest bagel and lox sandwich. With Zucker’s Bagels shop, the company hosted a viewing and eating party at its facility on 30 Gem St. to create the behemoth. Worry not, the companies followed all the rules set forth by Guinness World Records to construct and weigh the sandwich before they distributed it to the crowd. “The sandwich [followed] the Zucker’s Traditional sandwich recipe, with an oversized everything bagel, cream cheese, Acme’s Nova Scotia smoked salmon, tomatoes, red onions and capers,” a press release explained. (via Brokelyn)

~NYC SETTLES LAWSUIT AFTER 11-YEAR-OLD GIRL TESTIFIES ABOUT NYCHA MURDER: The family of Mikayla Capers, a little girl who was stabbed and witnessed a murder in a NYCHA elevator when she was 7 years old, settled their civil suit against the NYCHA on Wednesday morning after the now 11-year-old testified in court on Tuesday. Terms of the settlement are confidential, but the attorney for the family said that they were very happy with the outcome. “It was an excellent settlement, the family is thrilled,” said Elise Langsam of Langsam Law. “I am thrilled for them since it will take care of Mikayla for the rest of her life in terms of her physical problems, she’s going to need plastic surgery for the numerous stab wounds, and perhaps more significantly, for the PTSD [post-traumatic stress disorder] that will follow her for the rest of her life.” Capers and Prince Joshua Avitto were 7 and 6 years old, respectively, on June 1, 2014 when they were attacked in the elevator of their East New York NYCHA building nearly four years ago by Daniel St. Hubert(via Brooklyn Eagle)

EAGLE SPORTS: John Thurston already holds the most impressive achievement in St. Francis Brooklyn basketball history. The only hoops coach in the Remsen Street school’s history to lead a team to an NCAA Tournament added yet another one last week. Sophomore guard Jade Johnson scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Terriers mauled Mount St. Mary’s 75-56, making Thurston the winningest coach in the history of SFC women’s basketball. Thurston, who miraculously guided the Terriers to the 2015 NCAAs following an unprecedented run of three straight road victories in the NEC Tournament, nudged past current SFC Athletic Director Irma Garcia with his 69th win since taking over head coaching duties six years ago. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
