Local pol, former teacher tapped to lead Council’s Committee on Education
A Coney Island councilmember and former southern Brooklyn high school teacher has been selected to serve as the new chairperson of the City Council’s Committee on Education.
Councilmember Mark Treyger – a former history and civics teacher at New Utrecht High School and former United Federation of Teachers delegate – will head the committee for the 2018-2021 term.
“I believe in the New York City school system and the thousands of dedicated, hardworking administrators, educators and support staff that commit themselves to providing our city’s youth with a quality education,” said Treyger who, in his tenure in with the Council, has introduced and supported an array of legislation aimed at aiding city schools. “I believe in it because I am a product of it, and because I had the privilege of being one of those educators. Our thriving city is constantly changing, and so are the needs of our diverse and vibrant student body.
