NEW JERSEY — Remembering Gov. Brendan Byrne: A service member plays “Taps” next to a photograph of former New Jersey Gov. Brendan Byrne during his memorial service in Millburn on Monday. Byrne died last week at age 93. Several former governors and current members of the congressional delegation are attending the memorial service of the two-term Democrat. Byrne is remembered for being a bipartisan leader and for authorizing the law permitting gambling in Atlantic City.

SWITZERLAND — Snow Strands Tourists: Children walk past trees after heavy snowfall in Saas Fee on Tuesday. Unusually heavy snowfall and a high risk of Alpine avalanches stranded some 13,000 tourists Tuesday in the Swiss resort of Zermatt at the base of famed Matterhorn Mountain. With nearby roads, trains, cable cars, ski slopes and hiking trails into the town closed, Swiss authorities deployed helicopters to ferry some tourists to a nearby village to escape the snowbound Alpine valley.

UKRAINE — Family Mourns: Relatives of Iryna Nozdrovska cry over her coffin in Dymer on Tuesday. Ukrainian police say they have arrested a suspect in the murder of Nozdrovska, a lawyer whose death sparked demonstrations outside the national police headquarters in Kiev.

Castro and his rebels arrived in Havana via caravan on Jan. 8, 1959, after toppling dictator Fulgencio Batista.

PARAGUAY – Plants Cover River: Hundreds of Victoria Cruziana plants float over the Salado river water in Piquete Cue, near Limpio, on Asuncion’s outskirts, Paraguay, Sunday. This water lily that grows up to 2 meters wide, was according to locals believed to be extinct in the area. 

ENGLAND – Train Strike: Commuters wait for trains at Clapham Junction train station in London, Monday. Thousands of commuters face a week of mayhem from Monday as Southern, Greater Anglia and South Western Railway staff plough ahead with planned strike action.
