A Brooklyn judge from the Court of Claims and an Acting Supreme Court Justice, Hon. Elizabeth Foley died last Thursday after a battle with cancer.

Foley began her career in 1983 as an assistant district attorney in Staten Island. She worked in that office for 20 years before she joined the New York Attorney General’s Office as a senior investigative counsel until 2006.

After she left the AG’s Office, Foley went to work for the Department of Education until she was appointed to the NY Court of Claims and became an Acting Supreme Court Justice in the Bronx in 2007. In 2009, she was moved to Brooklyn where she finished her career.

A wake was held at Harmon Funeral Home in Staten Island over the weekend and Judge Foley’s funeral was held on Monday morning at St. Peter’s Church, also in Staten Island. For the ceremony on Monday, the church was overflowing with court employees, officers and fellow judges.

“She was at the Court of Claims, like me,” said Justice Matthew D’Emic, administrative judge of the Brooklyn Supreme Court, Criminal Term. “She was a tremendously fair and hardworking judge. More than that, though, she was a kind soul, a generous spirit and a wonderful person through and through.”
