THE LEDE: Happy Monday, Brooklyn! A photographer captures historic battles with toy soldiers, gentrification affects the mob, and we have the best places in the borough to get $1 dollar oysters. Plus, we try metal yoga, the parents of an NYC terror victim are suing the city, and Rand Paul once had six ribs broken in a fight. Finally, Beyonce passes Taylor Swift as the highest earning female musician of 2017, Vladimir Putin meets with Bashar al-Assad, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are officially engaged. Have a great week.

~BROOKLYN PHOTOGRAPHER CAPTURES TOY SOLDIERS FIGHTING HISTORY’S BATTLES: In a house on Staten Island, the battles of World War I and World War II, the American West, the Middle Ages and the Middle East still rage — in realistic dioramas made of antique toy soldiers set up inside large display cases. In one display, explosions propel unfortunate German WWI infantry soldiers high into the air as their companions crawl under barbed wire and cannons target their enemy. In another display, Arab soldiers parade on the grounds of a desert fort made of wood. These displays, and more, were created by Mario Belluomo, who has worked as a court officer in Brooklyn for 40 years. Belluomo has also been a photographer since he was 17, and has covered news stories for the Brooklyn Eagle since 1994. Now he is sharing some remarkable, never-before-seen photos of his collection. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~WHERE TO GET DOLLAR OYSTERS IN BROOKLYN: While oysters used to flow in waves around New York City, sanitary enough to eat out of New York Harbor, $1 happy hour oyster spots are still abundant on Brooklyn’s streets. As it stands, there are 27 restaurants in Brooklyn that serve oysters for $1 during happy hour. Brokelyn has put together a comprehensive list of them all that shows the small majority to be in Williamsburg, with six coming out of the neighborhood. The spots can also be found in Red HookPark Slope,GowanusCrown HeightsBushwickBrooklyn HeightsProspect HeightsBoerum Hill and Carroll Gardens. Some restaurants offer the deal on select days, but multiple have happy hours every day of the week. (via Brokelyn)

~BROOKLYN GENTRIFICATION AFFECTS THE MOB TOO: It wasn’t just the feds who crumbled the mafia in New York, it was caused by multiple factors, including the influx of out-of-towners. In his book, “The President Street Boys: Growing Up Mafia,” Frank DiMatteo tells of a time when shootings and mafia social clubs were prevalent up and down Atlantic Avenue. While they raked in dirty bills, gangsters would use their legitimate social clubs to wash their illegal money. But these clubs are now few and far between with most of the old school players either behind bars or six feet under. Part of the decline has to do with the city taking urban strategies to cripple wise guys, such as claiming water pumps on President Street had broken and condemning entire blocks filled with gang bars, restaurants and homes. DiMatteo mourns this variant of Brooklyn, saying the borough was better when the gangs owned it.(via Citylab)

~METAL YOGA, THE ENLIGHTENMENT AND DARKNESS CONJUNCTION:In the backstage of the Cobra Club in Bushwick, a group of people come together to practice a series of postures and progressive movements, synchronized with breathing to balance body, soul and spirit. The soundtrack of this yoga experience, far from being a Zen melody, is the strident tune of distorted guitars, emphatic rhythms, dense bass and drum sounds and the high-pitched voices of metal. The result is metal yoga, the enlightenment and darkness conjunction. Metal yoga involves several aspects of traditional yoga, but “it takes yoga away from all the peaceful and quietness to craziness,” saidSaskia Thode, metal yoga instructor and founder of Metal Yoga Bones. “It’s a lot of screaming, a lot of cardio, core, yoga poses — but we have a band,” she says of the poses, “and we play guitar and drums.” In Williamsburg, people also practice yoga to unusual sounds, like the bumping beats of deep house music. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
