Brooklyn Today
On this day in 1841, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle saw its inaugural edition. It was published with the full name of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and Kings County Democrat when 28-year-old Isaac van Anden ran the first copies off his printing press in his shop at 39 Fulton St. The Eagle grew to be the voice of the people, and did not shy away from reporting controversial issues, taking critical aim at the Tammany Hall graft.

On this day in 1941, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle front page reported published its centennial edition. This 76-page section, plus the Eagle’s usual news, feature and advertising sections, totaled 138 pages — the largest edition in the Eagle’s history thus far. The centennial edition published a 10-Point Plan for the revitalization and commonweal of Brooklyn, including a rehabilitation of the borough’s older sections, a new Supreme Court building, transit improvements, a “constant campaign” to bring new industry to Brooklyn, provisions for the Brooklyn Public Library, a new civic center and a renewal of the Brooklyn spirit.
