~DE BLASIO DOLES OUT CROWD PLEASERS AT BROOKLYN HEIGHTS TOWN HALL: With Councilmember Stephen Levin at his side, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced new investments in local parks, new schools, a doubling of the Boerum Hill Historic District and funds to reopen the Gowanus Houses Community Center, among other projects at Wednesday’s town hall held at St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights. The city will be investing millions inBushwick Inlet Park, Cadman Plaza Park’s shady north end and McCarren Park’s ballfields. De Blasio also announced a 500-seat school will be built on the Domino site, and a 332-seat elementary school at Albee Square inDowntown Brooklyn. He received applause when he said that the city has dedicated funds for the Cornerstone Youth Center, which will reopen the Gowanus Houses Community Center to kids after 10 years of being shuttered. He also used the power of the mayorship to connect aggrieved residents of Levin’s District 33 directly to commissioners and other officials filling almost a quarter of the seats in the St. Francis gym, ready to cut through red tape. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~LOCAL POLS AND JAZZ FANS WANT TO RENAME WILLIAMSBURG BRIDGE: A campaign has arisen to rename the Williamsburg Bridge after famed jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins. Rollins used to play the sax on the bridge for hours at a time, and now Brooklyn wants his name immortalized. Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is lobbying while City Council MemberStephen Levin introduced a piece of legislation for the renaming. “I support the greater effort to recognize the cultural contribution of Sonny Rollins, one of America’s most important musical ambassadors,” Adams wrote in a statement. Rollins himself wrote in The New York Times that the bridge was a great place to practice because “playing against the sky really does improve your volume, and your wind capacity.” Ultimately the decision for renaming will come down from Albany. (via Gothamist)

~LOOSE BULL SPARKS SLAUGHTERHOUSE PROTEST: A runaway bull is taking New York by storm all the way from New Jersey. The animal that escaped a Brooklyn slaughterhouse has found a new home with the new name Shankar, meaning “one who brings about happiness or prosperity.” Activists have since used the runaway steer’s story to protest slaughterhouses in the city and are calling for city agencies and NYPD to offer more training on dealing with runaway livestock. “There are literally billions of animals worldwide that are raised and slaughtered for food,” said activist Edita Birnkrant. “Shanker had a very strong will to live, very strong, that’s why he escaped and ran so far.” Shanker now gets to share 232 acres with about 40 other cows, includingFreddie, a bull from Queens. Consistent with the Brooklyn-Queens rivalry, however, Shankar and Freddie have not yet intermingled. (via Pix11 and NJ.com)

~LIN BLOWS OUT KNEE IN GRUESOME NETS OPENER: Eighteen points, four assists and three turnovers in 25 minutes. Those will be the statistics on the back of Jeremy Lin’s basketball card next year after the Brooklyn point guard went down for the season with a devastating rupture of his right patella tendon during the Nets’ disastrous 140-131 season-opening loss to the Indiana Pacers Wednesday night. “Jeremy worked tremendously hard during the offseason and in training camp and was excited for the prospects of the team this season,” Nets general manager Sean Marks said. The 29-year-old Harvard alum crumpled to the ground beneath the basket clutching at his right knee. At first Lin seemed shocked, then reached for the ailing joint, mouthed the words, “I’m done,” to the Nets bench and began weeping in anguish while lowering his head to the hardwood. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
