On this day in 1915, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle front page reported on the Austrian military force’s invasion of Serbia and Italy’s declaration of War on Bulgaria during the First World War. The Bulgarian army was reported to have been “annihilated.” In this war, the Allied and Central Forces were aligned differently than during World War II. Italy, Japan, Serbia and neighboring Montenegro and Greece were on the same side with Great Britain, France, and China, among others. The United States and China didn’t enter the war until 1917, on the Allied side…The Brooklyn Eagle also published a chart outlining President Woodrow Wilson’s six-year defense budget totaling $842 million.

On this day in 1931, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle front page reported that a Manhattan grand jury had returned four indictments against Joseph A. Broderick, state superintendent of banks, and 27 others in the crash of the Bank of the United States the previous December. Broderick was being charged with neglect of duty that led to the bank’s collapse and with conspiracy. Meanwhile, Broderick denied the charges and refused to quit. He also received a show of support from Gov. Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was quoted in the Eagle as saying he “had every confidence in his complete integrity.”

On this day in 1951, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle front page reported “More Police Heads to Roll,” as NYC Police Commissioner George P. Monaghan seized his department in a shakedown to flush out corruption. Already, three inspectors resigned, submitting their retirement papers. Monaghan promised the press more disclosures as he solidified his plan to reorganize NYPD … Meanwhile Anthony Anastasio, a labor leader with the International Longshoremen’s Union (ILA), was stoking a wildcat strike. The previous week, Anastasio had put a halt to the strike at the Brooklyn Army base but now he seemed to be doing the reverse action. In what the Eagle described as a “flying squadron,” Anastasio pulled men off the job at the Erie Basin. The ILA building on Court Street was dedicated to the union leader but was torn down in 2010. The residential development constructed at that site ironically used non-union labor.
