~SHKRELI HAS BAIL REVOKED, GETS JAILED IN BROOKLYN: A judge jailed former pharmaceuticals company CEO Martin Shkreli on Wednesdayafter finding that he violated his bail on a securities fraud conviction with a social media post that posed a threat to Hillary Clinton. Defense attorneys had argued at a hearing in federal court in Brooklyn that the post by Shkreli, offering a $5,000 bounty to anyone who could grab him one of Clinton’s hairs while she’s on a book tour, was political satire. But U.S. District Judge Kiyo Matsumoto didn’t see the humor, saying the offer could be taken seriously by fellow Clinton detractors. The Clinton offer could be viewed as “a solicitation of an assault,” the judge said before revoking Shkreli’s $5 million bail. “This is not protected by the First Amendment,” the judge said. “… There’s a risk that somebody may take him up on it.” (AP via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~CITI BIKE EXPANDS IN BROOKLYN: With Citi Bike’s headquarters located in Sunset Park and a new flagship operations facility opening in Gowanus in August, Brooklyn has slowly but surely become the heart and soul of the citywide bike-sharing program. The service has 600 stations spread out across 55 neighborhoods, including Downtown BrooklynDUMBOBrooklyn HeightsFort GreeneClinton HillBedford-StuyvesantRed HookPark SlopeBoerum HillCobble HillCarroll GardensGowanus,Williamsburg and Greenpoint. The system has grown from 6,000 bikes to 10,000 bikes since its inception in May 2013, and another 2,000 bikes are joining Citi Bike’s fleet in its next expansion. The next phase of growth, whichstarted on Tuesday, will bring 27 new stations or roughly 400 bikes toCrown HeightsProspect Heights and Prospect-Lefferts Gardens in the coming weeks. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~IRMA VICTIMS TAKE REFUGE IN BROOKLYN: Residents of a battered St. Maarten who have an interesting connection to Brooklyn are temporarilytaking refuge in the borough after Hurricane Irma’s destruction in the Caribbean. Sara Chanowitz and her children flew off the island, leaving her husband back home to help rebuild and distribute food. “I mean, roofs on the floors, and overturned vehicles, and trees everywhere, and people lost everything,” Chanowitz said about the storm. Her and her husband run St. Maarten’s Chabad House, one of the Jewish communal centers operated by theCrown Heights based Lubavitch movement. The family weathered the storm in the concrete Chabad House instead of their own home and eventually grabbed a U.S. military flight off the island. (via NY1)

~BRING AMAZON HQ2 TO BROOKLYN: In a sort of Willy Wonka-esque competition, Amazon has created an imaginary arena for North American cities to duke it out to decide which city will host the tech company’s new eight million square foot headquarters. Brooklyn lawmakers and developers have started working together on proposals to get the campus on Brooklyn soil, likely in a spot like Industry City or the Brooklyn Navy Yard. “Brooklyn’s innovation coast from Williamsburg to Sunset Park has numerous opportunities for a campus-like environment with an ecosystem of academic institutions, a skilled labor force, bedroom communities and culture,” CEO of Industry City Andrew Kimball said. Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adamsalso began working on a campaign called “Brooklyn Prime” to persuade Amazon to spruce up the borough even more (see blurb below). Financial incentives will also be given to the lucky winner. (via Curbed New York)

~ADAMS, HOAN PUSH FOR AMAZON IN BROOKLYN: Following Amazon’s opening of a new retail warehouse in Staten Island, Brooklyn BP Eric Adamsand BCC President and CEO Andrew Hoan have joined forces and written anopen letter to encourage the tech giant to lay down stakes in Brooklyn. The Seattle-based internet company was founded by Jeff Bezos in 1995. Amazon.com started as an online bookstore and later began selling CDs, DVDs and eventually moved into all merchandise areas including apparel, toys and video games. “Borough President Adams has been an integral partner in our mutual efforts to advocate for economic development throughout the borough,” said Hoan. “We look forward to continuing our ongoing effort to draw Amazon’s new headquarters to Brooklyn.”

EAGLE SPORTS: The New York Islanders, who have been making headlines all summer for where they might eventually play, be it Belmont Park or Willets Point or right here in Downtown Brooklyn, revisited their old haunton Sunday. The Islanders opened their preseason slate against Philadelphia at a place called NYCB Live on Sunday afternoon. The arena is more commonly referred to as the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Or, as most Islander fans like to call it, “The Old Barn.” “I see it from outside every time I’m here, but I’ve not been able to skate on it,” center Mathew Barzal said after the Isles’ rookie squad held a morning practice on the Coliseum ice last week. “Being able to skate there for the first time was a pretty cool experience.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
