ON THIS DAY IN 1945, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Koedel Given 15 Years, Girl 7 1/2 as Nazi Spies.”

The article focused on former Brooklyn residents who were tried in Brooklyn Federal Court and sentenced to prison for conspiring to commit espionage.

“The defendants were charged with attempting to transmit to Germany information of vital importance between October 1939 and October 1941. Koedel, arrested on Oct. 23, 1944 in West Virginia, pleaded guilty and his foster daughter was found guilty Feb. 19 after trial by jury,” the Eagle reported.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK WAS ESTABLISHED ON THIS DAY IN 1872. It was the first area in the world to be designated a national park. Most of Yellowstone is in Wyoming, with small sections in Montana and Idaho. It was established by an act of Congress.

FRÉDÉRIC CHOPIN WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1810. The pianist and composer is best remembered for his piano works. Chopin died in France in 1849 after a 10-year battle with tuberculosis.

RALPH ELLISON WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1914. The American writer and educator is the author of the acclaimed novel “Invisible Man,” the story of a young black man’s struggle for his own identity in the face of rejection from both whites and blacks. Quickly recognized as a classic of 20th-century literature, it won the National Book Award in 1953. While only one of his novels was published during his lifetime, Ellison published collections of his essays, reviews and stories in “Shadow and Act” and “Going to the Territory.” He died in New York City in 1994.

WILLIAM M. GAINES WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1922. He is best known as the founder and publisher of Mad magazine, which influenced dozens of humorists with its comic strips, movie parodies and political satire. Alfred E. Neuman, freckle-faced mascot of the publication, became a pop-culture hero. Gaines died in New York City in 1992.
