The Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association (BWBA) had their members dressed in red and filled the Marco Polo Restaurant in Carroll Gardens with red balloons for its first-ever Heart Healthy Event held last Thursday, Feb. 16.

The event was designed to raise awareness about heart disease and heart disease prevention. Members were given eye-opening statistics and advice on how to best avoid being at risk. The event included a tribute of music of black singers in recognition of Black History Month.

“We filled the room with red heart-shaped balloons and red-foiled dark chocolate,” said Sara J. Gozo, president of the BWBA. “Attendees included members of the judiciary, officers of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York, bar leaders and BWBA members. The BWBA will make a donation to the American Heart Association that will include a portion of the ticket price of tickets sold and donations made by supporters.”

According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular diseases and strokes are the cause of approximately 33 percent of deaths among women each year, which encompasses an estimated 44 million women in the U.S. each year. Women have a higher risk of stroke than men and 90 percent of women have at least one or more risk factors for heart disease. Women are also more likely to die during their first heart attacks compared to men.

The BWBA has two events scheduled for March including a Continuing Legal Education seminar on March 9 with Hon. Nancy T. Sunshine and Charles A. Small, chief clerk for civil matters at the Kings County Supreme Court, titled “Pitfalls in Filing Papers.”

Then on March 15, the BWBA will host a book reading with Hon. John M. Leventhal, who authored the book “My Partner, My Enemy: An Unflinching View of Domestic Violence and New Ways to Protect Victims.” Both events will be held at the Brooklyn Bar Association in Brooklyn Heights.
