Bay Ridge Community Council names Hidden Treasures award winners
Seven grassroots leaders who have worked, often behind the scenes, to make their neighborhood a better place to live will be rewarded for their efforts by the Bay Ridge Community Council at the organization’s annual Hidden Treasures of the Community Awards ceremony later this month.
Ralph Succar, president of the Bay Ridge Community Council (BRCC), announced the winners on Monday.
The 2017 winners include: Eileen Oldcroft, emergency medical technician at the Bay Ridge Ambulance Volunteer Organization 9BRAVO); Mary Bocchino, member of the Columbiettes at the Archbishop John Hughes Knights of Columbus Council; Mary Forestiere, recording secretary of the Bay Ridge Mental Health Council; Theresa Monforte-Caraballo, executive director of Grandma’s Love, Inc.; Dr. Ahmad Jaber, president of the Arab American Association of New York; Henrietta DeRyck, a tour guide; and Linda Dahl, vice president of Narrows Botanical Gardens.
Bocchino is also a member of the Kassenbrock Brothers Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund is named in memory of Walter and Vincent Kassenbrock, the brothers who founded the BRCC. The program awards scholarships to high school students for community service.
The BRCC was established in 1951 to promote the quality of life in the neighborhoods of Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Fort Hamilton in Southwest Brooklyn.
The council’s membership consists of civic organizations, PTAs, church groups and nonprofits.
The BRCC will salute the Hidden Treasure Award winners at its meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at Shire Hill, 9000 Shore Road (enter on 91st Street), at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.
The BRCC’s Civic Affairs Committee, led by former BRCC presidents Alexander Conti and Dean Rasinya, selects the winners and coordinates the awards ceremony.
The Hidden Treasures Award, which was established by the BRCC in 2004, was created to recognize people who have given their time, talent and support to the community over the years, BRCC leaders said.
