Court invites radio personality for talk on Black History Month

The Kings County Courts Black History Month celebration continued when it hosted radio personality Michael G. Haskins for a discussion titled “Telling Our Story” at the courthouse on Jay Street last Friday.

Haskins, who hosts “The Morning Show” five days a week on WBAI Radio, emphasized the importance of documenting family history through storytelling. He discussed how technology like the iPhone can be extremely helpful in helping to capture family stories.

Haskins shared recordings of his late father when describing him to give further insight into his father’s life. Haskins explained that whether it was his father sharing a recipe about how to cook neck bones or recalling memories of getting a job, the recordings of helped to capture an invaluable part of his family’s history.

Haskins pointed out that nobody is more capable of telling their story than themselves and urged people in the audience to capture their own stories in some way.

The Kings County Courts Black History Month Committee has more events lined up for the rest of the month. On Friday, there will be a program at the Criminal Court at 120 Schermerhorn St. titled “The Crisis in Black Education.” It will take place at 1 p.m. in the lobby.

The following week, there will be two events taking place at the Supreme Court at 320 Jay St. The first is a two-day event on Tuesday and Wednesday at 1 p.m., during which the documentary “13th” will be shown and popcorn will be served. The other event is “A Sip and Chat with Nat Turner,” where a court employee will teach the audience about Nat Turner by dressing up as him to tell his story. It will take place on Friday at 1 p.m.
