Greetings, Brooklyn. Today is the 61st day of the year.

ON THIS DAY IN 1946, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “9,575 Auto Accidents in ’45 Set Boro Record.”

The article focused on the incidence of automobile accidents skyrocketing from previous years.

“Warning that a period of enormous expansion of motor vehicle and highway facilities lies ahead, the governor said it was not difficult to imagine what a ‘do-nothing’ policy on motor traffic facilities and controls would mean to New York’s industrial and social life,” the Eagle reported. “The statewide toll in 1945 … consisted of 1,763 persons killed, 80,776 injured and property damage costing more than [$21 million].”
