ON THIS DAY IN 1949 the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Martyrs’ Monument Repairs Completed.”

The article focused on the finished repairs of the Prison Ship Martyrs’ Monument in Fort Greene Park which had deteriorated from weather.

“[The monument] was constructed…as a memorial to more than 1,200 Revolutionary patriots who died on board the British prison ships anchored in Wallabout Bay,” the Eagle reported.

ARTHUR ASHE was born on this day in 1943. Ashe became a legend for his list of firsts as a black tennis player. He won a total of 33 career titles. After his diagnosis, Ashe campaigned and fundraised for AIDS awareness. He died in New York City in 1993.

MARCEL PROUST, famed French author, was born on this day in 1871. He gained international recognition for his 13-volume masterpiece “A la Recherche du Temps Perdu.” He died in November 1922.
