The article focused on the president’s arrival in Washington, D.C., after a three-destination trip.

“President Roosevelt, Secretary Loeb and Surgeon General Rixey returned to Washington from their visit to Canton, Indianapolis and Lansing … via the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad,” the Eagle reported.

THE SALEM WITCH TRIALS began on this day in 1692. Massachusetts Bay Colony Gov. Sir William Phips ordered a special court to expedite judgment of the more than 150 people accused of witchcraft. Bridget Bishop was the first of the jailed, brought to trial on this day in 1692.

MARVIN HAMLISCH was born on this day in 1944. Hamlisch was a composer and conductor of film and Broadway scores, born in New York City. He was accepted to Juilliard at age 7 and went on to compose scores for “The Sting,” “The Way We Were,” “A Chorus Line” and more. He won multiple Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards as well as a Pulitzer Prize.

MARQUIS DE SADE was born on this day in 1740. De Sade was a military man, governor general, playwright and author who spent most of his life in asylums because of his acts of cruelty and violence. He died in 1814.

“THE SUNLIT NIGHT,” by Brooklynite Rebecca Dinerstein, will be featured at the powerHouse Arena tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. in DUMBO. Dinerstein’s debut novel features two protagonists who venture to a “desolate land in search of solitude, but find companionship in their unexpected bond.”
