ON THIS DAY in 1915, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Whitman to T.R.: ‘Party is Corrupt.’”

The article focused on a letter penned by the then-New York district attorney alleging political corruption.

“In a letter produced by counsel for Theodore Roosevelt during the re-direct examination of the former president today, Gov. Charles S. Whitman, then district attorney of New York, told Charles H. Duell that ‘the time is ripe’ for all Progressive Republicans and members of the Progressive party to ‘rid the state of the party control which is responsible for corrupt conditions,’” the Eagle reported.

“DUKE” ELLINGTON was born on this day in 1899. Born as Edward Kennedy, Ellington was one of the most influential individuals in jazz history. He was responsible for more than 1,000 musical pieces, including “Mood Indigo.” He died in 1974.

WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST was born on this day in 1863. Hearst was a media magnate of the late 19th and early 20th centuries who built an empire consisting of 28 dailies, 18 magazines, radio stations and other outlets. The Hearst brand of journalism tended to be sensational and was dubbed “yellow journalism.”  Hearst died in 1951.

A CHARTER AWARD DINNER honoring Dave Smith and Lou Pastina will take place at 6 p.m. tonight at New York Marriott Marquis (1535 Broadway). The fundraiser, sponsored by St. Francis College, is part of the college’s 54th Annual Charter Award Dinner and features CNBC’s Bob Pisani as its emcee.
