DSNY to expand curbside food collection
Additional neighborhoods in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island have been added to the New York City Organics Pilot Program.
“Organic materials make up about a third of our trash,” said New York City Department of Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia. “When you recycling your food and yard waste, you decrease the amount of garbage going to landfills and help create a greener and healthier New York City.”
The program, which focuses on organic waste like food, food-soiled paper and yard debris, currently serves more than 100,000 households in all five boroughs. The expansion will add approximately 35,000 new households including Northern Bay Ridge (starting the week of June 8) and Greenpoint and North Williamsburg (starting the week of June 15).
More than 6,500 tons of material has been collected since the program’s start.
