March 4, birthdays for Rick Perry, Landon Donovan, Patricia Heaton
ON THIS DAY in 1908, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Fear Belmont May Not Use Blackwell Bridge.”
The article focused on a debate about whether or not the Steinway Tunnel should be purchased.
“The Blackwell’s Island Bridge Protective Association and the Committee of Forty in Queens have each written letters to the Public Service Commission protesting against the purchase of the Steinway tunnel from the Belmont interests unless an agreement is made to compel the Interborough and Mr. Belmont’s other traction interests in Queens…” the Eagle reported.
NOTABLE PEOPLE born on this day include author and television personality Chaz Bono, who was born in 1969; soccer player Landon Donovan, who was born in 1982; musician Emilio Estefan, who was born in 1953; “Everybody Loves Raymond” actress Patricia Heaton, who was born in 1959; politician Kevin Johnson, who was born in 1966; “The Great Gatsby” actress Patsy Kensit, who was born in 1968; “Rich Man, Poor Man” actress Kay Lenz, who was born in 1953; comedienne and writer Catherine O’Hara, who was born in 1954; Gov. TODAY IS NATIONAL GRAMMAR DAY. This recognized day is intended to honor language and its rules. Clear communication helps us understand each other.
A FREE GUITAR WORKSHOP for teens and adults will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Greenpoint Library (107 Norman Ave.). The class will focus on the fundamentals of guitar playing — chords, blues scales, proper fingering techniques and more. Attendees should bring an instrument. See bklynlibrary.org to RSVP.
Special thanks to “Chase’s Calendar of Events” and Brooklyn Public Library.
