RUMC Hosts GO RED Event for Women’s Heart Health Awareness

February is American Heart Month, in recognition of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women initiative Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton, will be hosting a Women’s Heart Health Event on Friday, February 6 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the hospital’s lobby and Sipp Auditorium. All employees and community members are encouraged to show their support and wear red.

“Heart disease is the number one killer of women and is more deadly than all forms of cancer combined. This is why it is so important for us as a healthcare provider to inform and educate the public about their risk factors. When you are educated on what to look out for, you become more inclined to pick up on the warning signs.” shared RUMC President and CEO, Daniel Messina Ph.D., FACHE, LNHA.

This event is open and free to the public. All community members are encouraged to come and participate. There will be representatives present from the RUMC Cardiac Unit, Stroke Awareness Team and Trauma, as well as from the Protecting One Young Heart at a Time Foundation, Staten Island Heart Society, Heart to Heart Club and Support Group, and YMCA.

There will be two guest speakers at the event to help educate the public on the steps they should be taking to maintain a healthy heart and warning signs to look out for when something is wrong and when they should seek the medical advice of a physician.

Dr. Francesco Rotatori will be speaking on heart health and Sandra Saccone, physician practice administrator, will be providing her personal story as well as encouraging women to watch for heart health warning signs.

The event is the start of a monthly series of events the hospital will be hosting throughout 2015 in recognition of national health observances. RUMC’s March 11 event will focus on colorectal cancer awareness and the need for regular colonoscopies.
