Several newcomers to the City Council now lead the legislative body’s Brooklyn delegation. Councilmember Carlos Menchaca of Sunset Park and Red Hook will serve as co-chair, alongside returning Councilmember Darlene Mealy of Bed-Stuy, Ocean Hill, Brownsville, East Flatbush and Crown Heights.

Menchaca received more votes than Councilmember Stephen Levin to take over the co-chairpersonship from Councilmember David Greenfield, who has moved on to serve as chair of the Council’s Land Use Committee.

Chairs of the Brooklyn delegation represent the borough in helping to negotiate the city’s budget.

This news continues the ascent of Menchaca, 33, as a growing power in Brooklyn and NYC politics. He won a surprise victory over incumbent Councilmember Sara Gonzalez for the 38th Council District seat and is the city’s first Mexican American councilmember.
