March is here and that means spring and all the outdoor activities that come with it are only around three short weeks away. This year, among the offerings will be the Prospect Park Alliance’s JuniorĀ Volunteer Corps, beginning March 30.

Designed to “encourage young Brooklynites to make a meaningful impact in their community,” the new series of weekend volunteer outings will have elementary-aged groups and their families help with spring cleaning in their favorite major local park.

“We hope that by encouraging park stewardship to children at a young age, they will grow up understanding the importance of volunteering in their community and will continue to do so for many years,” said Eric Landau, vice president of government and external affairs at the Prospect Park Alliance.

Over 4,000 people volunteer approximately 25,000 hours every year for the stewardship and support of Prospect Park each year.

The Junior Volunteer Corps is just one of several ongoing weekday and weekend volunteer activities, ranging from educational events to beautification, slated to begin in late March, 2014, said the Alliance. The Corps dates and locations are as follows:

  • Sunday, March 30 (3rd Street and Prospect Park West)
  • Sunday, April 13 (Parkside Ave. and Ocean Ave.)
  • Saturday, April 19 (Donald and Barbara Zucker Natural Exploration Area, enter at Grand Army Plaza, south on East Drive)
  • Saturday, April 26 (Children’s Corner, enter at Flatbush and Empire)
