Don’t text and drive, but do sign up for email and text alerts from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) about license and registration renewal deadlines.

Registration and license reminders will be sent 90, 60 and 30 days prior to expiration, and again on the day of expiration, while inspection reminders will be sent on the first, 15th and last day of the month of expiration.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the new service on Tuesday, February 18, calling it “a step forward in [our] efforts” to reverse the DMV’s reputation as “a symbol of inefficient state government.”

Drivers can sign up for the service online at www.dmv.ny.gov, by regular mail when renewing their registration, or at a DMV office. Anyone who has completed an online transaction in the last two years will be automatically enrolled. Customers can also unsubscribe at any time.
