Brooklyn Bridge Park construction continues
Brooklyn Bridge Park will be taking advantage of the winter months by commencing construction on its northern and southern ends, which will expand the parkland and park services for use about a year from now.
Details about the expansion and construction schedule are as follows, courtesy of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy:
Main Street:
Brooklyn Bridge Park is constructing new parkland and amenities at Main Street. The open space design will feature an expanded lawn, a new dog run, improved pedestrian and bicycle circulation, an upgraded entry plaza at Washington Street, and a bouldering wall. The former NYC DEP building (the “Plymouth St. Building”) will be transformed into a 1,700 square foot public park building providing restrooms, community meeting space, an environmental education center and operations space. The design will also feature glass facades providing a light-filled entryway into the new public space.
For the duration of construction, the Main St. dog run and lawn will be closed. The Main St. Playground and Pebble Beach, however, will remain open.
We apologize for any inconvenience to parkgoers, and look forward to welcoming you to the new parkland in Winter 2014/2015.
Alternate dog runs in the area are located at:
Hillside Dog Park: Columbia Heights and Vine Street
Pier 6 Dog Run: Brooklyn Bridge Park at Atlantic AvenueJohn Street:
John St. Park will include new waterfront parkland featuring pedestrian bridges over a tidal salt marsh, tree-lined pathways, and a 13,000 square-foot gathering lawn. Brooklyn Bridge Park is completing the Pier 6 parklands. This project will add 3.4 acres of landscape and lawn areas to the southern end of the park. The design comprises a seasonally vibrant perennial flower garden, a network of lawns bordered by shade plantings and seating, and the extension of the pier’s 30-foot wide exterior promenade.By Spring 2014, Brooklyn Bridge Park will be almost two-thirds complete. With the opening of Pier 4 Beach and Pier 2 — a 5 acre active recreation pier including a roller rink, bocce, handball, shuffleboard and basketball courts, as well an expansive turf, gym equipment and swings — there’ll be even more ways to enjoy Brooklyn Bridge Park this year!
