Good morning. Today is the 311th day of the year. On this day in 1902, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported that the city’s Rapid Transit System was obligated to begin construction of the first Brooklyn-Manhattan subway tunnel within four days. The Eagle asked several high officials of the Interborough Rapid Transit company (now the IRT division of the city’s subway system), all of whom said they had no information about any plans to break ground on the tunnel. Ultimately, because of political machinations, the tunnel, used nowadays by the 4 and 5 trains, didn’t open until 1908.

Well-known people who were born today include DJ David Guetta, evangelist Billy Graham, Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart, singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell (“Big Yellow Taxi,” ‘Woodstock,” ‘Both Sides Now”), actor Barry Newman (“Petrocelli’) and singer Johnny Rivers (“The Seventh Son,” “Poor Side of Town”).
