Lutheran Medical Center doctor tells warning signs of stroke

Dr. Salman Azhar, chairman of Lutheran Medical Center’s Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine Department, will be the featured speaker at a health care forum on Oct. 13, offering information on how to recognize the signs of a stroke and how the hospital is pioneering advanced stroke treatments.

Azhar will be speaking at the New Hope Lutheran Church in Jamaica, Queens, as part of a Health Sunday Speaker Series. The presentation, which is open to the public, will address how Lutheran Medical Center in Sunset Park is working to give patients a new lease on life, hospital officials said. The doctor will also speak about the risk factors of stroke and offer tips on how to recognize when someone has a stroke.

Dr. Azhar’s presentation will take place at the conclusion of the church’s 10 a.m. service. It will begin at approximately 11:30 a.m. A question and answer period will follow. There will also be a health fair featuring free flu shots and blood pressure and diabetes screenings.

Lutheran Medical Center, located at 150 55th St., has an interdisciplinary Stroke Center, led by Azhar, which provides stroke treatment and stroke rehabilitation services. The center uses a three-pronged approach that includes rapid assessment, immediate intervention and comprehensive rehabilitation.

The New York State Department of Health named Lutheran Medical Center a designated regional stroke center. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations recently designated the hospital as a primary stroke center.
