‘A Wake-Up Call’ illuminates disparities in breast cancer treatment
“A Wake-Up Call,” a short film produced by Barbara Sutton Masry and co-written with director Adam Nadler, will be screened at various venues in the New York area in autumn, before and after October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The short focuses on a Brooklyn Syrian-Jewish woman’s homecoming after her last chemo session and her reaction to an effusive family welcome.
It is the opening sequence of the full length comedy/drama feature with the same name currently in development, which explores two Brooklyn families in crisis, Syrian-Jewish and African-American as they deal with the effects of a serious illness and the inequity in health care. With the health care law in jeopardy and a new study seeking answers as to why African American die at a higher rate than others, the longer film will raise awareness of the serious disparity of health care .
Actors attached to the longer feature are Mira Sorvino, Dan Hedaya, Peter Jacobson, Ashanti and Amanda Setton. Shooting is expected to begin in Spring, 2014.
