Known locally as Seattle’s “pie lady,” award-winning poet Kate Lebo will be debuting  “A Commonplace Book of Pie” (Oct. 8th, 2013) at Gala Gala Hey! Pie Stand at The Drink in Williamsburg on September 15. This is one of a variety of events on Kate’s national book tour this fall, where she will provide edible samples of her handiwork as she teaches classes, hosts pie socials, and, of course, shares her book with literary and foodie fans across the nation.

“I love banana cream pie and Kate Lebo’s poems with the same fervor,” said National Book Award winner Sherman Alexie. “Lebo is a necessity and luxury. I will forever be her fan.”

A slim volume of less than 10,000 words, A Commonplace Book of Pie contains a mix of prose poems, recipes, humor, pop culture, and ephemera about America’s favorite dessert. In essence, it’s a lyrical rumination on the real and imagined relationships between pie and those who love it. This quirky little gem also includes 24 original watercolors and illustrations by artist Jessica Lynn Bonin that put pie and the art of baking in a fresh, contemporary context.

Author Kate Lebo makes poems and pies in Seattle. Her writing has appeared in Best New PoetsGastronomica, and Poetry Northwest among other journals, and she’s currently at work on a pie cookbook for Sasquatch Books, forthcoming in 2014. When Kate is not creating poems, she hosts her semi-secret pie social, Pie Stand, at locations around the U.S., teaches creative writing at Richard Hugo House, and pie making at Pie School, her cliché-busting pastry academy. Check out Kate’s Pie School Apple Pie video: It’s sweetness, snark, and sincere contemplation mixed with a secret ingredient. You can also find more information about her and the book on Kate’s website

The Sept. 15 event will begin at 3 p.m. The Drink is located at 228 Manhattan Ave. in Williamsburg.
