We’re starting the day with some rain to wash away the night and welcome a sunny afternoon. We’ll see a high of 59 degrees with a low of 36 degrees tonight. Wind is slated to move west-northwest at 10 to 20 mph during the day.

Sunrise was at 6:32 a.m., sunset will be at 7:25 p.m., and the waning crescent moon will rise at 4:14 a.m..

Beloved film critic Roger Ebert died yesterday at 70 years old after celebrating 40 years at the Chicago Sun-Times. He fought a long and public battle with cancer and other health problems for 10 years, and continued to influence generations of critics and movie lovers. [Chicago SunTimes, NYTimes]
Hundreds of fast food workers went on strike yesterday, demanding a “living wage” of $15 an hour instead of $7.25 an hour. NYC’s minimum wage is set to rise incrementally to $9 per hour over the next three years. [NPR]
The National Hurricane Center will change the way it issues advisories and warnings, continuing to send them out as long as the storm “threatens people and land,” as opposed to stopping — as it did during Hurricane Sandy — when the storm changes categorization from Hurricane to Superstorm. Two Trees Management is defending its decision to hire New York Insulation to remove asbestos from the Domino Sugar Refinery buildings ahead of redevelopment construction, despite the company’s history of not paying employees and doing inadequate work. The DUMBO-based developer says it has “total confidence” in the asbestos-removal company. [Gothamist]
