Take a Language Class at Fluent City

Whether you are looking to boost your resume, plan a trip out of the country, flex your brainpower or better communicate with the hottie upstairs, taking a language class is an awesome way to fill a winter night. Check out Fluent City, a language school for adults with classes in Williamsburg and Midtown Manhattan. Fluent City offers 10 languages (French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, German, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian and Hebrew) and supplements weekly classes with cool slang workshops and special events including Song and Poetry night. 20 hours of instruction is $315-355 depending on location. Get Fit at Brooklyn Boulders

With over 22,000-square-feet of climbable terrain, Brooklyn Boulder is the largest dedicated rock climbing gym in New York City. The space features bouldering, top roping and lead climbing. If you have no idea what any of those things are, don’t worry – there are several classes for all levels of climbers throughout the week in addition to classes in yoga and slack lining. Even better, the gym will stay open till 2am every night this winter! If you are a biker there is plenty of bike parking inside the gym while you work out and lockers are available if you bring your own lock. $19-22 for full day, gear extra, monthly plans available.

Gather the Gang for Bowling at The Gutter

The Gutter features 8 vintage lanes that are perfect for a low-key winter night. If you aren’t totally over booze tabs, there are 12 craft brews on tap that can be purchased by the glass or pitcher while you bowl. Bowling is 2-for-1 after 1am Sunday-Thursday and Fridays from 2-6pm. In addition, the space hosts a free weekly Monday night trivia series at 7pm. $7 per game, $40-45 per hour.

Get Cultured at the Brooklyn Museum

The Brooklyn Museum holds New York City’s second largest art collection with roughly 1.5 million works. However, the museum is less crowded than bigger name museums and offers a dynamic collection of pieces including a mummy preserved in its original coffin. Be sure to check out feminist piece The Dinner Party by Judy Chicago, commemorating 1,038 important women from history. Suggested donation, Wednesdays, Fridays-Sundays 11am-6pm, Thursdays 11am-10pm.

Dress for a Theme Party at the Bell House

The Bell House’s well-curated events are worth the trek out to Gowanus. The bar offers a rotating schedule of events, comedians and music. Theme nights include 90s Trivia Night hosted by Pat Kiernan and Spice World Sing-Along Night. Each theme-specific evening has a series of activities such as trivia, costume contests, sing-alongs, science discussions and cover bands included in the cover. Cost varies by event.
