Good morning. Today is the 41st day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Feb. 10, 1888, contained an interview with Bill Cleaver, a “jolly Englishman” who had opened Boniface’s, which was described as the first English chop house in the city of Brooklyn. Among the items on the menu in the establishment, whose address wasn’t given, were mutton, Welsh rarebit, stewed tripe, venison, and, of course, lots of nut-brown ale.

Well-known people who were born today include actress Elizabeth Banks, singer-songwriter Donovan (“Mellow Yellow,” “Sunshine Superman”), signer Roberta Flack (“Killing Me Softly With His Song”), opera singer Leotyne Price, former New York Mets baseball player Lenny Dykstra, Olympic swimmer Mark Spitz and Brooklyn-born sprinter Justin Gatlin.
