Students at P.S. 506, the School for Journalism and Technology, got into the holiday spirit this year by giving back to those in their community.

In an effort spearheaded by Principal Lisa Sarnicola and members of the PTA, students collected both goods and money to donate to victims of Hurricane Sandy. In less than no time, $3,600 was gathered.

“The PTA decided the best place to donate the money: keeping it in the community,” Sarnicola explained. “In our community, money is not accessible at all times.”

Last week, P.S. 506 presented a $2,096 check to Bay Ridge Cares, which operates out of St. Mary’s Church, cooking hundreds of hot meals six days a week for people hard-hit areas.

On December 11, Jack Oehm, a New York City Firefighter and representative of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund, accepted a check for $1,500 on behalf of the organization during a special assembly.

“It’s very important for children to see where the money was going and to meet people from the organization,” Sarnicola said. “This year, we are taking on a new initiative, to push leadership in school by showcasing strengths, whatever they may be. Students are doing a good job and are proud of themselves.”

The kids at P.S. 506 certainly have a lot to be proud of. They put on an impressive show before the check was given. Fifth grade violinists played holiday favorites both unaccompanied and with the P.S. 506 chorus, consisting of third through fifth graders. Members of the student government, who are in fourth and fifth grades, were also present.

Since the school does focus on journalism, students got a chance to ask Oehm questions.

One girl asked how people affected by Sandy celebrate the holidays.

“Some don’t have a home. For those people, they won’t have a very happy holiday,” said Oehm, adding that the foundation is donating Christmas trees and toys, and is hosting a holiday party for Sandy victims –where Santa may be a special guest.

“Hopefully, they have family and friends to celebrate and enjoy the day,” Oehm said.

Another student asked if their donations would really go directly to victims.

“We will spend every dollar and cent on hurricane victims,” Oehm promised, noting that items purchased include food, clothing, gift cards, sheetrock, insulation and dehumidifiers. “We are now taking on the role to help those hurt by Hurricane Sandy.”
