THE BUZZ: Last Night of Ballyhoo

Because of Sandy, numerous events were postponed for at least a week, including The Last Night of Ballyhoo.

More ready than ever, however, Ballyhoo, produced by the Ridge Repertory Company, comes into town to awe the audiences on multiple performance dates.

We have a very committed cast and the show will go on, said Bay Ridge Jewish Center (BRJC) President, Ruth Masyr. The show will be taking place at BRJC, located at 8025 Fourth Avenue.

Four dates remain, beginning on the weekend of Saturday, November 17 and Sunday, November 18; and, also offered on the first weekend of December, Saturday, December 1 and Sunday, December 2. The Saturday performances are at 8 p.m.; the Sunday performances are at 5 p.m.

With tickets costing $15, and a portion of the profits being donated to storm relief efforts, Ballyhoo, by Alfred Uhry, focuses on a dramatic comedy that is set in 1939 in Atlanta, Georgia.

The message being delivered?

When people dont expect it, good things happen and dreams come true, noted Masyr. A positive outlook goes a long way.

This romantic comedy is based on an eccentric family, and described as very touching, by Masyr. Its aimed at teens, and based on Discrimination and acceptance, a universal theme still going on for a very long time, she said.

Gone with the Wind is premiering and with a war in Europe building up, this Jewish family, the Freitags, are only concerned about whos going to be taking the young women to the ball, Masyr continued. Romance comes in and humor, a funny dialogue between mother and daughter [takes place]. Seven characters, an older generation and a younger generation, make of this a terrific show, she stressed

Its very humorous, Masyr exclaimed.

Uhry is a Tony Award winning playwright, and the author of Driving Miss Daisy. With Last Night of Ballyhoo, he has created a story that is both heartwarming and hilarious.
