Renovated Bed-Stuy Y to celebrate; will dedicate pool
The Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA will host a special anniversary reception celebrating five years since the branch completed massive renovations.
The event, which will include the dedication of its pool in memory of Glendon L. Breedy, will be held on Thursday, Oct. 4, at the Y.
Breedy, a Brooklyn native who maintained a lifelong bond with the branch as volunteer, donor and board member, learned to swim there as a child and, as an adult, played an instrumental role in the facility’s reconstruction.
The renovations included building 19,000 square feet of new space as well as doing a full overhaul of the original 21,000-square-foot historic structure.
Since reopening in 2007, the facility has doubled the number of children and teens it serves annually and increased the number of adults served to more than 8,000, according to Dordy Jourdain, executive director.
Jack Lund, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater New York, will be on hand as will many of the individuals responsible for the reconstruction effort.
The event will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The Bed-StuyY is at 1121 Bedford Ave., at Monroe Street.
