Calling all teen girls with singing experience!

The Bella Voce Singers, a nonprofit women’s choir based in Brooklyn, is recruiting youth members for a new Brooklyn Teen Girls Honors Choir, which will rehearse for four Mondays after school and then perform with the women’s choir in a joint choral festival on Saturday, October 27, at Greenwood Baptist Church, at Seventh Avenue and 6th Street in Park Slope.

The Honors Choir is open to girls in grades eight through 12, and is free to all members accepted, thanks to a grant from the Brooklyn Arts Council. Applications are available at http://www.bellavocesingers.com/join-us and should be submitted along with a recommendation letter from a music or other teacher to [email protected].

“We wanted to give teen girls in Brooklyn the opportunity to sing in a high-level performing ensemble, which they may or may not already have at their school or church,” explained BVS Director Jessica Corbin, who is a state certified music educator. “ It is also an opportunity to perform with an adult women’s choir so that [girls] can see that music isn’t just something that they do as a fun thing as a kid. It’s something that you can carry with you through the rest of your life, that can bring you joy and be a hobby throughout your adulthood.”

The Honors Choir will be led by BVS Assistant Director Melanie Curcio, herself a student of Corbin’s from when she attended LaGuardia High School of Music, Arts and Performing Arts.

“As a student at LaGuardia,… since I wasn’t an athlete, being part of a choir was my way to be on a team,” noted Curcio. “Just like in sports, each person is an important part of a larger group, where you must trust, respect and encourage one another to be successful. I’ve now been able to use these traits in the workplace and in my personal relationships.”

Rehearsals will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on a series of Mondays: September 24, and October 1, 15 and 22. The inaugural Bi-Annual Women and Girls Choral Festival will take place on Saturday, October 27, with the days rehearsals beginning at 9 a.m.
