McCarren Pool Temporarily Closes; Reopens To Long Lines
The newly reopened McCarren Park Pool closed early on its first Friday after a group of teenagers allegedly attacked lifeguards for telling them to stop doing back-flips into the pool.
NYC Parks Department spokesperson Vicki Karp told the New York Times that the fight broke out shortly after 6 p.m. on June 29 and that there were no serious injuries. NO arrests were reported.
The remodeled pool — last in use in 1974 — opened on schedule at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 30, to long lines of Brooklynites from Williamsburg, Greenpoint and beyond, all seeking a cool, watery respite from the sweltering 90- to 100-degree heat. However, the 1,500-person outdoor pool was over capacity by 1 p.m., and Parks Department employees put a halt to new entrants until existing swimmers left.
